| Customer Question: Are Mealworms Good For Hedgehogs? |
|
No, mealworms should not be put out for hedgehogs, or left out where hedgehogs can eat them. They are bad for hedgehogs. Hedgehogs will eat things regardless of whether or not they are good for them (hence the 'hog' in their name!) so it is important not to have anything at hedgehog-level that is not actually good for them to eat. If you want to give hedgehogs a tasty treat, calciworms are a great source of calcium protein and fat, and are a meaty, easy-to-digest treat for many creatures including hedgehogs. They should not be a main food source though, as they don't have the full range of nutrients that hedgehogs need. See hedgehog food for a nutritionally balanced mix with the right ratio of calcium to phosphorus and added Vitamin D₃, which together support healthy bone density. This is important as an imbalance can contribute to Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD), where the body draws calcium from the skeleton, weakening bones and impairing mobility. |
